The new era in space exploration is fueled more by advances in key technologies and commercial trends than by geopolitics. Curt Hall sees tech like AI and robotics, 3D printing, pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, materials science, as well as the commercialization of space itself — hastening exploration of the cosmos. Explore how the now-developing next-generation space economy promises to impact life on Earth and in outer space. Read it below or here: https://lnkd.in/ekwKZQcm #space #commercialization #Amplify

Even for cities with comprehensive public transportation systems, discouraging private car use is challenging. Employing transport-oriented development (TOD) can help cities achieve sustainable development goals, according to Sk. Riad Bin Ashraf, Denis Daus, and Tobias Kuester-Campioni. Explore the creative ideas and sustainable urban design that they propose to create model TOD cities, including improving public transit, building autonomous and pedestrian/bicycle-friendly transit infrastructure, and establishing high-density mixed-use zones, among others. Achieving net zero carbon by 2025 will require radical changes in transport and governance. Strategic urban mobility plans, or SUMPs, can help local and regional authorities meet challenging European Green Deal targets. In his Amplify article, Andrea Lorenzini describes the CIVITAS SUMP-PLUS project, which set up six laboratories to demonstrate how cities can develop the next generation of SUMPs that “put mobility at the heart of sustainable urban transformation.” Explore this sustainable, resilient, and integrated framework for urban mobility below, or here: https://lnkd.in/eUE_vZPn #SustainableMobility #UrbanInnovation #Amplify Arthur D. 👉 Call for Papers! 👈 Purpose sounds beguilingly simple, but the journey to it is daunting, even for seasoned executives. Achieving organizational purpose requires fostering sustained commitment from individuals uniting around common challenges. For an upcoming Amplify issue, Guest-Edited by Profs Oana Branzei and Dusya Vera of Ivey Business School at Western University, we invite articles that identify strategies for achieving purpose-driven leadership and illustrate the transformative potential of scaffolding purpose. Please consider submitting an abstract for consideration in this special issue. 👉 For submission guidelines, visit: https://lnkd.in/e9Ta_EXs #leadership #purpose #callforpapers #scaffoldingpurpose #purposedrivenleadership #amplify #publishing Arthur D. Free-floating car-sharing systems could contribute substantially to reducing traffic density and CO2 emissions. But uneven travel patterns can create a vehicle distribution imbalance. One proposal to mitigate this challenge is with an anticipative customer-centric pricing approach. This data-driven pricing model would charge different customers different prices for the same car, depending on their location, reducing operational costs and improving sustainability via reduced emissions, according to the authors. Learn more about this approach below or here: https://lnkd.in/ehVMCi2x #sustainability #carsharing #mobility #dynamicpricing

This engaging National Geographic profile of astrodynamicist and environmentalist (and recent Amplify journal contributor) Dr. Moriba Jah offers insight into his push toward a "paradigm shift for society’s attitude toward the environment, including space." https://lnkd.in/e_tn3-wZ
Though vast, orbital space is not infinite. Adding large-scale commercial satellite launches to already-orbiting operating and abandoned satellites creates the potential for “a tragedy of the commons” in space. Dr. Moriba Jah proposes a solution guided by the tenets of traditional ecological knowledge, that include recognizing space as a dynamic ecosystem in which changes in one part can impact the whole, designing satellites and spacecraft for longevity/reusability, and promoting a greater sense of accountability among spacefaring nations and commercial entities.
