Free-floating car-sharing systems could contribute substantially to reducing traffic density and CO2 emissions. But uneven travel patterns can create a vehicle distribution imbalance. One proposal to mitigate this challenge is with an anticipative customer-centric pricing approach. This data-driven pricing model would charge different customers different prices for the same car, depending on their location, reducing operational costs and improving sustainability via reduced emissions, according to the authors. Though vast, orbital space is not infinite. Adding large-scale commercial satellite launches to already-orbiting operating and abandoned satellites creates the potential for “a tragedy of the commons” in space. Dr. Moriba Jah proposes a solution guided by the tenets of traditional ecological knowledge, that include recognizing space as a dynamic ecosystem in which changes in one part can impact the whole, designing satellites and spacecraft for longevity/reusability, and promoting a greater sense of accountability among spacefaring nations and commercial entities. A space mission cyberattack could lead to data loss, compromise missions, and endanger human life.
